FeatureFlight vs Bonsai

How the two tools compare on project management depth, billing, contracts, AI, and team support, and which one fits a freelancer who's becoming an agency.

Last updated October 2026.

The short version

Bonsai is built for solo US-based freelancers and contractors. It's strongest where the work touches money and paperwork: invoicing, contracts, proposals, expense tracking, 1099 tax. Where it's lighter is the work itself: project management is closer to a task list than a real kanban-and-sprint system, and there's no team chat, docs, or capacity planning.

FeatureFlight is built for service businesses that have grown past the solo-freelancer stage: consultants with multiple clients, agencies, and teams. Real project management, time tracking, invoicing, client portal, team chat, docs, goals, and AI all in one workspace. Less depth on tax/bookkeeping than Bonsai (we don't compete there), more depth on running the actual work.

If your day is half admin and half tax filing, Bonsai is built for you. If your day is shipping client work, alone or with a team, FeatureFlight is the closer fit.

Pick FeatureFlight if…

  • You run a team, even a small one, and need real project management, chat, and docs alongside billing.
  • You bill multiple clients at once and want a kanban-driven workflow, not just a task list.
  • You want AI built into briefs, project structures, and invoice summaries, not a bolt-on.
  • You're growing past the solo-freelancer stage and want one tool that scales with you.

Pick Bonsai if…

  • You're a solo US-based freelancer and want bookkeeping, 1099 tax filing, and contracts in one place.
  • Sending professional contracts and proposals from a deep template library is a daily need.
  • You don't manage a team, run sprints, or need internal chat and docs.
  • Your accounting workflow (Bonsai Tax, expense tracking) matters more than your project workflow.

Where the difference actually shows up

Real project management vs. task lists

Bonsai's project view is a clean task list with due dates and a few statuses. Fine for a solo freelancer running a few client engagements. FeatureFlight ships full kanban boards with custom columns, sprints, backlogs, templates, and AI-generated project structures. If your work has dependencies, milestones, and contributors, the difference shows up on day one.

Team scale and chat

Bonsai is built around the solo operator. Team features exist but they're an add-on, and there's no internal chat or docs to coordinate work. FeatureFlight ships team chat, docs, mentions, file sharing, and capacity planning, the things you actually need once it's not just you.

Tax and bookkeeping

We're not going to oversell here: Bonsai genuinely beats us on tax and bookkeeping. Bonsai Tax, expense categorization, and 1099 filing are real, mature features. FeatureFlight doesn't compete in that lane. If your top pain is tax season, Bonsai is the better tool, and you can keep using it for that even if you run the rest of the business in FeatureFlight.

Proposals and contracts

Bonsai has a deep template library for proposals, contracts, and client paperwork, and that's what a lot of users come in for. FeatureFlight comes at contracts from the client side: on Pro, upload any PDF to a client's Documents tab and send it for legally binding eSignature, with signers pulled from the client's contacts, a teammate countersigning if needed, and the signed copy filed back on the client automatically. What isn't built yet is the template library itself. Proposal and contract templates are on the roadmap, so if you draft every contract from a template inside your tool today, take that into account.

AI built into the work

FeatureFlight's AI suite is included on Pro: task breakdowns, project generation from a sentence, daily briefings, AI doc generation (create proposals, contracts, SOPs, anything from a prompt), invoice summaries, and client intelligence. Bonsai has added some AI surface area, but it's not the core of the product. If you want the tool to draft, summarize, and surface things automatically, the gap is real.

Migrating from Bonsai

Clients and tasks both import by CSV today. Export your Bonsai tasks to a CSV, map each column to a FeatureFlight field, and statuses, assignees, due dates, priorities, comments, and attachments all come across. Anything we don't already have a field for, you create as a custom field during the mapping step. Full project-level migration is on the roadmap. Many people coming from Bonsai keep using it for tax and bookkeeping while moving the day-to-day project, billing, and client work into FeatureFlight. That combination works fine.

Questions

FeatureFlight vs Bonsai, answered

Is FeatureFlight a good alternative to Bonsai?

It depends on where your day goes. Bonsai is built for solo US-based freelancers and is strongest where work touches money and paperwork: invoicing, contracts, proposals, expense tracking, and 1099 tax. FeatureFlight is built for service businesses that have grown past the solo stage, with real project management, team chat, docs, capacity, and AI alongside billing. If you run a team or bill multiple clients at once, FeatureFlight is the closer fit.

Does FeatureFlight do tax and bookkeeping like Bonsai?

No. Bonsai genuinely wins there. Bonsai Tax, expense categorization, and 1099 filing are mature features, and FeatureFlight does not compete in that lane. Many people coming from Bonsai keep it for tax and bookkeeping while moving the day-to-day project, billing, and client work into FeatureFlight. That combination works fine.

Which is better for a growing agency?

FeatureFlight. Bonsai centers on the solo operator, so team chat, docs, sprints, and capacity planning are not its focus. FeatureFlight ships full kanban and sprints, channels-and-threads chat, docs with AI generation, goals, and capacity, the things you need once it is not just you.
