FeatureFlight vs Asana

How a polished general-purpose project tool compares to a service-business operating system on billing, AI, client portal, and pricing.

Last updated October 2026.

The short version

Asana is a polished, general-purpose project management tool used widely by internal teams: product, marketing, operations, engineering. It's well-designed, has solid reporting and dashboards, and Asana Intelligence has added meaningful AI surface area. What it isn't: a service-business operating system. There's no native invoicing, no time-tracking-to-invoice workflow, and no client portal in the sense an agency or freelancer means it.

FeatureFlight is built specifically for service businesses: agencies, freelancers, consultants. Project management is the start, not the whole product. Time tracking flows into invoices with Stripe payments, the client portal is built in, AI with doc generation is included on Pro, and one per-user bill replaces the stack of separate subscriptions you'd otherwise pay for billing, chat, and AI on top of Asana.

If you're running an internal team that doesn't bill clients hourly, Asana is excellent. If you're running client work and want billing, payments, and a client portal in the same tool, FeatureFlight is the closer fit.

Pick FeatureFlight if…

  • You bill clients for time or fixed-fee projects and want the billing loop in the tool.
  • You'd rather pay one bundled per-user bill than stack Asana + Harvest + QuickBooks + Slack + Asana Intelligence on top of each other.
  • AI bundled into the Pro tier matters more to you than paying for a separate AI add-on on top of your project management subscription.
  • Client-facing surfaces (portal, branded invoices, guest access) are a routine need.

Pick Asana if…

  • You run a large internal team across functions (product, marketing, ops, engineering).
  • You don't bill clients and have no need for invoicing, time-to-invoice, or a client portal.
  • Reporting depth and dashboards across many projects are a core need.
  • You're already standardized on Asana company-wide and have process built around it.

Where the difference actually shows up

The billing loop

Asana doesn't close the loop from time entries to a paid invoice. Time tracking exists in some tiers, but turning hours into a billable invoice means exporting to a separate tool: Harvest, QuickBooks, FreshBooks. FeatureFlight's time entries flow directly into a polished invoice with a Stripe payment link. The gap shows up every time you bill.

Bundled cost vs. the stack

Asana lists at roughly $11-25+/user/month across its tiers. To actually run client work in Asana, you'd typically add Harvest or Toggl for billable time tracking (~$9/user/month), QuickBooks or FreshBooks for invoicing ($30+/month), Slack for team chat ($7/user/month), and Asana Intelligence sits in the higher Asana tiers. The combined stack typically runs $40-55/user/month. FeatureFlight Pro at $39/user/month, or $31 on annual, bundles all of it. The per-seat number is comparable; the total spend is lower, and there's no glue work to keep five tools in sync.

AI included vs higher-tier

Asana Intelligence is a strong AI surface, but most of its capabilities are gated to higher tiers. FeatureFlight includes the full AI suite on Pro: task breakdowns, project generation, daily briefings, AI doc generation (create any document from a prompt), invoice summaries, and client intelligence. No separate AI add-on.

Service-business specificity

Asana is built to be a flexible canvas for any kind of work. That makes it work for a marketing team and a design agency and an engineering team, but it also means none of those workflows are deeply opinionated. FeatureFlight is opinionated for service businesses: time tracking that bills, projects that have clients, invoices that have line items, a portal that's actually for clients.

Client portal that means it

Asana has guest users in higher tiers, but they get an interface designed for internal team members, and it's not really a client experience. FeatureFlight's guest access on Pro is built for clients: scoped permissions, project-only visibility, and a clean view that doesn't require explaining the rest of the tool.

Migrating from Asana

Your tasks come with you. Export an Asana project to CSV and import it into a FeatureFlight taskboard. You map each Asana column to a FeatureFlight field, so sections and statuses become board columns, and assignees, due dates, priorities, comments, and attachments all land on the right cards. Any Asana custom field we don't already have, you create during the mapping step. Clients import by CSV the same way. Full project-level migration is on the roadmap; most teams move within an afternoon.

Questions

FeatureFlight vs Asana, answered

Is FeatureFlight a good alternative to Asana?

For service businesses that bill client work, yes. Asana is a polished general-purpose project tool for internal teams, with no native invoicing, no time-to-invoice workflow, and no client portal in the sense an agency or freelancer means it. FeatureFlight builds all of that in. If you run an internal team that does not bill clients hourly, Asana is excellent as-is.

Does FeatureFlight include invoicing and a client portal that Asana lacks?

Yes. Asana does not close the loop from time entries to a paid invoice, and its guest access gives clients an interface designed for internal team members. FeatureFlight flows time entries into an invoice with a Stripe payment link, and its Pro client portal is built for clients: scoped permissions, project-only visibility, and a clean view.

Is FeatureFlight cheaper than Asana?

Asana lists at roughly 11 to 25 dollars per user per month, but running client work on it usually means adding a billable time tracker, an invoicing tool, and Slack, plus Asana Intelligence sits in higher tiers, a stack that typically runs 40 to 55 dollars per user per month. FeatureFlight Pro at 39 dollars per user per month, or 31 on annual, bundles all of it.
