Creating a taskboard
Set up a board to manage your team's work, choose a layout, configure columns, and attach it to a project or client.
A Taskboard (or “board”) is where work gets planned and tracked. It gives your team a shared visual space to see every task, who owns it, and what state it’s in. You can run a board inside a project, tie it to a client, or keep it completely standalone.
Layout types
When you create a board you choose a default layout. You can switch between layouts at any time, and the same tasks appear in all of them.
| Layout | Best for |
|---|---|
| Kanban (default) | Drag-and-drop workflow columns, the classic board view |
| Table | A spreadsheet-style grid for scanning lots of tasks at once |
| List | A flat, scrollable list, fast to skim and keyboard-friendly |
| Timeline | A Gantt chart ordered by due date, great for deadline planning |
Create a board
- Go to Taskboards in the main navigation, or open a project and click the Boards tab.
- Click Create Board (or + New Board).
- Enter a Name for the board.
- Choose the Default Layout (Kanban is selected by default).
- Pick your starting Columns, or leave them as the defaults (To Do, In Progress, Review, Done).
- Optionally attach the board to a Project, link it to a Client, or leave both blank to keep it standalone.
- Click Create.
Starting columns
FeatureFlight pre-fills four columns to get you moving: To Do, In Progress, Review, and Done. You can rename, reorder, add, or remove any of them before you create the board, or adjust them later from the board settings. See Board columns, WIP limits, and approval.
Attaching to a project or client
A board can be connected to:
- A project: tasks on this board contribute to the project’s overall completion and appear on its Boards tab.
- A client: tasks are linked to that client without needing a full project.
- Neither: useful for internal ops boards, hiring pipelines, or anything that doesn’t map to a specific project.
You can change these associations after creation from the board’s Settings tab.
What to do next
Once your board is created:
- Customize columns and add WIP limits as needed: Board columns, WIP limits, and approval
- Choose which fields appear on task cards: Board fields and custom fields
- Add your team: Board fields, roles, and members
- Start adding tasks: Creating and editing tasks
