Messaging basics
Start chats, send formatted messages and files, and keep your channel list tidy. FeatureFlight's built-in messaging keeps team conversations alongside the work.
Messaging in FeatureFlight keeps team conversations next to the work, with no extra app required. You can message one person, a group, or even just yourself.
Channel types
- Direct Message: a 1:1 conversation. DMs are named after the other person; you can’t rename them or add a third person (start a Group Chat for that).
- Group Chat: two or more people, with an optional name. Any member can add or remove people later, and members can leave on their own.
- Self-chat: a channel with only you. A handy scratchpad for notes, links, or draft messages no one else can see.
Starting a chat
- Click New Message in the messaging sidebar.
- Type a name or email to find a teammate, and select the people you want.
- One person → Start Chat opens a Direct Message. Two or more → optionally name the group, then Create Group. No one selected → opens your self-chat.
The message composer
The composer supports rich text so messages stay readable:
- Bold, italic, and inline formatting via the toolbar or keyboard shortcuts.
- @mentions: type
@and a name to notify someone directly, even if they aren’t watching the channel. - Links: paste a URL and it becomes clickable automatically.
- Reactions: hover a message and click the emoji icon. Click a reaction again to remove yours.
You can edit or delete any message you sent from its action menu (edited messages show an “edited” indicator). You can’t edit or delete other people’s messages.
Attaching files
Drag a file onto the composer or click the attachment icon. Supported types: images (JPEG, PNG, GIF, AVIF, WebP), documents (PDF, DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, TXT), and ZIP archives. The limit is 10 MB per attachment.
Every file sent in a channel is catalogued under the channel’s Attachments tab, so you can filter by Images or Files instead of scrolling back through the conversation.
Organizing your channels
- Unread badges show a count on channels with new messages. Channels sort by most recent activity by default.
- Star a channel (hover → Star icon) to pin it near the top regardless of activity, useful for a core team chat or key client.
- Search at the top of the sidebar finds a message across every channel you’re in. (Search matches message content, not channel names; to find a channel, search by participant in the New Message flow.)
